Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links
Pebble Beach has been ranked No. 1 on every Golf Digest ranking of public golf courses, and it has never fallen outside the top 10 of Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest ranking since 1969. The iconic 17-Mile Drive course has been dubbed “the greatest meeting of land and sea.”
Pine Valley Golf Club, Clementon, N.J.
Founder George Crump had help from now-legendary architects H.S. Colt, A.W. Tillinghast, George C. Thomas Jr. and Walter Travis. Then Hugh Wilson (of Merion fame) and his brother Alan finished the job. Since 1985, only four times has Pine Valley not finished No. 1 on America’s 100 Greatest ranking (finishing second each time).
TPC Sawgrass (Players Stadium Course),
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
The annual home to the Players Championship might be late architect Pete Dye’s most
famous design. The stadium-like concept was the brainchild of then-PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman, and the 1980 layout by Dye was the model on which to build upon.
TPC Scottsdale (Stadium Course), Scottsdale
The famed home of the Waste Management Phoenix Open boasts one of the most well-known stadium holes in golf: the par-3 16th. Tiger Woods’ hole-in-one in 1997 put it on the map for casual fans, who now flock to Scottsdale during Super Bowl week to party in the desert.
Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland
Having opened in 1848, the Home of Golf is perhaps the most influential course in the world. As our Ron Whitten puts it: “Every course designed since has either been in response to one or more of its features, or in reaction against it.” The 2022 Open Championship will be the 30th time the classic links has held the storied event.
Whistling Straits (Straits Course), Haven, Wis.
A former abandoned army base, this windswept psuedo-links contains 1,012 bunkers
(at least on our last count). Whistling Straits is scheduled to host the 2020 Ryder Cup, having already been the site of three PGA Championships since 2004.
